About Mindfulness

Find out what mindfulness is and how it can benefit your mental and physical states leading to a less stressful, more fulfilling life.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness in its simplest sense means showing up for what is happening in the present moment.

However, when we begin to practise mindfulness it can seem very difficult.

Our minds jump from one thought to another and even when we try our best to stay present, we often find ourselves lost in day-dreams, schedule planning, mentally writing to do lists, worrying about the future or ruminating and reminiscing about the past.

When we begin to practise mindfulness, we realise that we are hardly ever awake to the present moment even when we are driving, working or spending time with friends and family.

Why does this matter, you might ask. There are many downsides to being ‘away somewhere else mentally’. These include increased stress, emotional and mental health difficulties, insomnia, missing out on what’s pleasant in life and a reduced ability to handle life’s difficulties and adversities.

As we begin to practise mindfulness, we train our minds in such a way that we are gradually able to live with a greater awareness of the present moment. Living more often in the present moment does not only mean paying more attention to what is going on externally, it also means getting to know ourselves better. This includes learning to inhabit our bodies more and becoming more familiar with our patterns of thought, emotional states and the ways in which we tend to react. When we get to know ourselves better, we can often step out of unconscious habits of reactivity. When we do that, we can also find that the upsetting or unhelpful beliefs we hold about ourselves, others and the world around us, lose their power over us.

A deeper aspect of mindfulness involves learning to be present in the moment without trying to change how we find it. This is often termed ‘acceptance’ or ‘non-judgement’.

Practising mindfulness at this deeper level can be transformative.

Not only do we learn how to shift from ‘doing’ to ‘being’, we also learn how to live our lives in a way that doesn’t cause suffering for ourselves, others and the planet in which we live.

This deeper level of mindful awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence, healthy relationships, sound physical health and mental health – thriving as opposed to surviving and being able to respond skilfully to life’s ups and downs.

“Louise led us in a sensory journey which was a very welcome break from the other discussions we were having. Louise really understood her audience and tailored the session so it had the most effective result. I would highly recommend Louise and the mindfulness session as a great way to introduce perspective, clarity and focus to organisations and their teams.”
